Traffic wardens left confused by colours of cars

10 June 2010

Edinburgh's drivers and the city's traffic wardens have never seen eye to eye but now it seems that the traffic wardens might not actually have very good eyesight. It has recently been brought to light by new records that parking chiefs were forced to cancel 18 tickets last year due to the colour of the vehicle being marked down incorrectly.

The cancelled tickets were amongst thousands of others which had to be cancelled by the council for various reasons. Edinburgh's traffic wardens are often described as over enthusiastic but private operator NSL who carries out the ticketing on behalf of the council defended themselves stating: "We have almost halved our small number of errors over the past two years through refresher training and we will continue to focus on that so we can ensure the service becomes even more accurate."

However the amount of cancelled tickets attracted criticism from the RAC whose spokesman said: "The phrase more haste, less speed comes to mind. It seems as if some wardens are worrying too much about how many tickets they're issuing and not enough on getting the detail right - and that means the council spending a lot of money in administration dealing with hundreds and hundreds of appeals which are then upheld."

It's unfortunate for visitors that most Edinburgh rental cars are generally in solid colours such as black, silver and white so easy to distinguish for the city's parking wardens.
