Renting a car in Iceland can cost more than buying one

20 July 2010

In the UK we are always told we live in rip off Britain and at Edinburgh Rental Car we're always trying to bring down the prices of vehicle rental for our customers. However, it has recently emerged that those who are renting cars in the UK should be happy with the price they're paying already in comparison to Iceland.

A recent r eport has revealed that the cost for renting a car over the course of the summer in Iceland for a period of one week will cost up to 100,000 Iceland kronur, equivalent to £525!

With that in mind, travellers heading to Iceland should be made aware that for that price you could purchase a second hand vehicle - potentially saving yourself money in the process. A local news source in Iceland, Frettabladid, has found that the cost of hiring an Opel Corsa for three weeks would be ISK 292,600, whereas buying a 2001 model of the same car would cost ISK 320,000 from a local car dealership.

Although the price spike is seasonal, the financially troubled country has recently been putting more pressure on visitors to spend their hard earned cash whilst holidaying. Most car hire operators will be looking to take advantage of the summer months before visitor numbers drop significantly as winter takes hold.
