Edinburgh moving to a cashless parking system

25 June 2010

Visiting Edinburgh soon? Driving your own car to the capital or renting a car in Edinburgh? Bringing your credit cards with you? If not you could soon be in for a long walk to the nearest parking ticket dispenser.

In new plans by Edinburgh Council, parking meters are set to be phased out to make way for a "cashless" system which allows drivers to pay for their parking by mobile phone with their credit card. The Council are currently in talks which could see the end of sticking a parking ticket to your windscreen.

The new parking system will work by having drivers call up a number, give their registration number, their location and then pay using their credit card. There is also the possibility that drivers may be allowed to extend parking time in bays by calling and topping up their parking without having to go to their car.

However state of the art the ticket free parking system may be it poses a huge problem for those without cards or those who are unwilling, understandably, to give their credit card details over an unsecure phoneline.
